In a large skillet over medium-high heat, crumble and cook the hot Italian sausage until it's browned through, about 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess grease – honestly, don't skip this step, or your Air Fryer Hot Italian Wraps will be soggy. While it's cooking, I get the most amazing savory aroma that just makes my stomach rumble with anticipation. It’s the foundational flavor for these wraps.
02 -
Add the thinly sliced bell pepper and onion to the same skillet with the cooked sausage. Cook until they're softened, about 5-8 minutes, stirring occasionally. This is where the magic happens, as the veggies pick up all that delicious sausage flavor. I love how the onions turn translucent and the peppers get a little char; it adds so much character to the filling.
03 -
Stir in half of the marinara sauce (about 1/4 cup) and the Italian seasoning with the sausage and veggies. Cook for another 2-3 minutes, just enough for the flavors to truly meld and deepen. Give it a taste here, and if you're like me, you might want to add a tiny pinch more seasoning. This mixture should smell absolutely incredible right now – it’s the heart of your Air Fryer Hot Italian Wraps!
04 -
Lay out one large flour tortilla. Spread a thin layer of the remaining marinara sauce (about 1 tbsp) in the center. Spoon about a quarter of the sausage and veggie mixture over the sauce. Top with a generous sprinkle of provolone and mozzarella cheeses. I always try to add just enough cheese without overstuffing, but sometimes I fail, and that's okay, a little extra cheese is never a bad thing!
05 -
Fold in the sides of the tortilla, then tightly roll it up from the bottom, creating a neat wrap. Make sure it's snug, or you'll have cheese escaping in the air fryer – I learned that one the hard way, trust me, it’s a pain to clean. Repeat with the remaining tortillas and filling. This step can get a little messy, but that's part of the fun, right?
06 -
Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for 3 minutes. Place 1-2 Air Fryer Hot Italian Wraps in the air fryer basket, seam-side down, making sure not to overcrowd. Cook for 6-8 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and crispy. They should look all toasty and the cheese inside should be wonderfully melted. Carefully remove and repeat with the remaining wraps, then sprinkle with Parmesan and fresh basil, if you remembered to buy it!
